QNP – The information was released at the meeting between Quang Ninh provincial People’s Committee with the Ministry of Transport in Hanoi last week.
According to Vice Chairman of Quang Ninh provincial People’s Committee Nguyen Van Thanh, the Quang Ninh International Airport will officially open by the end of 2017. Quang Ninh province had approved the feasibility report, chosen an investor and granted an investment licence for the project.
The Quang Ninh Department of Transport has been assigened to supervise the project’s execution under the Build-Operate-Transfer model, he said.
In addition, the traffic infrastructure connecting to the airport has been under implementation. The Ha Long-Van Don Road has received land clearance approval and will connect with the Ha Long-Hai Phong Highway by the beginning of 2018.
Quang Ninh has also invested in the construction of a connecting road from the centre of Van Don to the airport.
The airport, to span 290 hectares in Doan Ket Commune, Van Don district will have runways 3,000m x 45m in size to allow the operation of long-range and wide-body Boeing 777s.
Upon its completion, the airport with an annual capacity of more than six million passengers, will have one 3.8-kilometer-long runway to accommodate large aircraft including Boeing 747s. By 2026, the second runway will be built to allow the operation of the Airbus A380.
The Van Don airport would play a vital role in bolstering the zone’s investment climate and tourism development as Quang Ninh is also home to the World Natural Heritage site of Ha Long Bay.
The project is invested by the domestic Sun Group – the owner of luxury resorts in Da Nang including Ba Na Hills and Son Tra Intercontinental Resort. The investor will also invest in an integrated casino and resort complex which are important components of Van Don Economic Zone.
Previously, Quang Ninh province showed a strong determination to speed up the construction pace of components in Van Don Economic Zone to drive socio-economic development not only in the province but also the Northern Key Economic Region.
Van Don Economic Zone is envisaged covering more than 2,000 square kilometers. It will be developed into a hub for commercial and financial centers, trade and logistics facilities, high-class tourism products, sea and air transport services, industry, clean and high-quality agricultural sector./.
