In the heart of Vietnamese people, Yen Tu mountain is a holy land of Vietnamese Buddhism. In deed the mountain has become the cradle of Vietnamese Buddhism since the heroic emperor Tran Nhan Tong surrendered his throne to lead a religious life here in 1299. At the mountain he founded a Vietnamese Buddhism zen sect called Thien Phai Truc Lam. Not like another zen sects, Thien Phai Truc Lam believes “the Buddha of the mercy is not in Tay Thien (West sky) or somewhere like that; the Buddha is in the heart of every person. If someone always gets rid of the evils and do the good things for everybody. That is the Buddha of the mercy.”

After the emperor passed away, Vietnamese people paid the respect to him as the Emperor-Buddha. Today every spring many Vietnamese people come to Yen Tu mountain to do the offerings to the Emperor-Buddha and pray for a happy and prosperous new year.
